One-day courses: 9th April – Hoe (planting potatoes) / 14th May – Hoe (hoeing, earthing-up potatoes) / 28th May – Hoe (sowing quinoa, black beans) / 4th June. Hoe (sowing buckwheat) / 2nd July – Hoe and scythe (hoeing and earthing up crops, cutting grass) / 20th August – harvesting potatoes / 17th September – harvest (sickle) / 1st October – harvest.
If you have read and enjoyed at least some of our books, and want to learn more, then you might be interested in attending one of our courses.
The courses are centred around the use of a few basic tools: the HOE, the SICKLE, and the BILLHOOK, and how they are used on a daily basis to create a subsistence garden.
The couses are completely free, but participants are expected:
- To be farming a patch of ground by hand, or have an active project to do so.
- To bring their own tool(s) (This might not be possible if you are travelling a long way!)
- To be comfortable with hard outdoor work. (Although subsistence gardening is relativeley light work, we won’t just be spending the day sitting around!)
- Have read An Introduction to 21st Centry Hoe Farming. (This book describes how we farm, so if you’ve read it, you’ll have a good idea of how we’ll be working during the course!)
The courses either last for one day (10am-5pm), or two and a half days. We have fixed some dates for 2026 (see top of page). But more dates might be added based on demand. If you are interested, please send an email (via our contact page) with some information about yourself, and what you might be interested in learning.
