Description
Samuel Lewis, subsistence farmer, and self-taught artist retraces his experiences (through his character ‘Tim the Gardener’) of returning fertility to his small patch of ground in Brittany, France.
Starting with a barren field, Tim first remakes hedgerows, plants and coppices his trees, builds a stone house, creates a vegetable garden and starts growing grain crops, like buckwheat and rye. Vegetation is cut and collected to fertilize the fields, and, despite harsh conditions and numerous pests, life gradually starts to return to the depleted and barren soils.
The adventures of Tim are described in silent pictures, with just a small amount of text to direct the reader in the right direction.
